Description
The Toyota Corolla 1.8L 7A-FE is a well-known Toyota A-series gasoline engine, particularly associated with Corolla models from the 1990s and early 2000s.
The 7A-FE is a 1.8-liter, naturally aspirated, inline-four-cylinder petrol engine developed by Toyota as the largest production member of its A-series engine family. It has a 1,762 cc displacement, DOHC 16-valve cylinder head, cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder head, multi-port fuel injection and a timing belt. Production of the 7A-FE ran broadly from the early 1990s through 2002.
The 7A-FE was used in several Corolla generations, including:
- Toyota Corolla E100/AE102
- Toyota Corolla E110/AE112
- Toyota Corolla E110/AE115
- Toyota Corolla Wagon
- Toyota Corolla Spacio, depending on market
It was also used in vehicles such as the Toyota Carina, Caldina, Corona, Celica, Avensis and Sprinter
The 7A-FE uses a robust cast-iron block, which contributes to its durability.
DOHC 16-valve head
It has two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, giving it 16 valves in total.
The camshafts are driven by a timing belt, not a chain. The belt is a maintenance item and should be replaced at the manufacturer’s/service interval.
The conventional 7A-FE is generally classified as a non-interference engine, meaning a broken timing belt normally does not result in piston-to-valve contact.
The engine uses multi-port electronic fuel injection, rather than a carburetor.
Bottom line: The Toyota 7A-FE is a 1.8L/1,762 cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine producing roughly 105–120 hp and 149–159 Nm depending on specification. It is known for simplicity, durability and relatively inexpensive maintenance, and was used extensively in Corolla and other Toyota models.
