Description
The Toyota Hilux 2.7L 2TR-FE is a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated petrol/gasoline inline-4 engine from Toyota’s TR engine family. It is widely used in Hilux pickup trucks and other Toyota vehicles. The 2TR-FE uses DOHC, 16 valves, electronic fuel injection and VVT-i/Dual VVT-i depending on the version. Toyota lists the engine at 2,694 cc with a 95.0 × 95.0 mm bore and stroke.
The output depends on the Hilux year and market.
For later Hilux models, Toyota specifies approximately:
- Maximum power: 122 kW (about 164 hp) @ 5,200 rpm
- Maximum torque: 245 Nm @ 4,000 rpm
- Compression: 10.2:1
Earlier 2TR-FE Hilux versions had slightly lower outputs. For example, some 2005–2015 Hilux applications produced around 116–118 kW and 240–241 Nm.
Main characteristics
2.7-liter displacement:
At 2,694 cc, the engine provides considerably more low- and mid-range torque than Toyota’s smaller petrol engines.
Naturally aspirated:
There is no factory turbocharger on the standard 2TR-FE. This makes the engine mechanically less complicated than a turbocharged diesel.
VVT-i/Dual VVT-i:
Later versions use Dual VVT-i, allowing Toyota to optimize valve timing for power, fuel consumption and emissions.
Timing chain:
The 2TR-FE uses a timing chain rather than a conventional timing belt.
The Toyota Hilux 2TR-FE 2.7L is a 2,694 cc, 4-cylinder petrol engine producing roughly 160–165 hp and 240–245 Nm depending on version. It is naturally aspirated, fuel-injected, DOHC 16-valve, and uses VVT-i/Dual VVT-i. It is known for being a relatively straightforward petrol powerplant suited to pickup and utility applications
