Description

The Toyota 1MZ-FE is a 2,994 cc (3.0-liter) naturally aspirated V6 gasoline engine from Toyota’s MZ engine family. It uses a 60-degree V6 layout, DOHC, 24 valves, aluminum construction, multi-port/sequential fuel injection, and, on later versions, VVT-i on the intake camshafts. It was produced from the 1990s into the 2000s and was used in vehicles such as the Toyota Camry, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander, Harrier, Kluger and Lexus ES 300/RX 300.

The 1MZ-FE came in several specifications, so output depends on the year and vehicle.

Early non-VVT-i versions:

  • Approximately 168–194 hp
  • Approximately 248–275 Nm
  • Around 5,200–5,400 rpm for maximum power

Later VVT-i versions:

  • Approximately 200–220 hp
  • Approximately 283–304 Nm
  • Some Toyota applications produced 220 hp and 304 Nm

The later 1MZ-FE VVT-i added Toyota’s Variable Valve Timing-intelligent system to the intake camshafts. This helped improve low- and mid-range torque, fuel economy and emissions while maintaining good high-rpm performance. Toyota’s technical documentation also identifies ETCS-i electronic throttle control on later versions.

The 1MZ-FE uses a lightweight all-aluminum engine design, including an aluminum block and aluminum cylinder heads. The V6 has a 60° bank angle and four valves per cylinder.

Its cylinder numbering is:

  • Rear/right bank: 1-3-5
  • Front/left bank: 2-4-6
  • Firing order: 1-2-3-4-5-6

The 1MZ-FE uses a timing belt, not a timing chain. The belt drives the exhaust camshafts, while gears on the exhaust camshafts drive the intake camshafts.

This means the timing belt is a major maintenance item when purchasing a used engine.

Fuel and intake system

The engine uses multi-port electronic fuel injection. Many versions also use Toyota’s ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction System), a variable-length intake system designed to improve torque across different engine speeds.
