Description
The Toyota 3S-GTE is a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve, turbocharged gasoline engine from Toyota’s S engine family. It was produced from the mid-1980s through the 2000s and became particularly famous for powering the Toyota Celica GT-Four, Toyota MR2 Turbo and Toyota Caldina GT-T/GT-Four.
It is essentially the turbocharged performance version of the 3S-GE. The engine uses a robust cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder head, turbocharger, intercooling and electronic fuel injection.
The 3S-GTE is known for a strong construction consisting of:
- Cast-iron cylinder block
- Aluminum-alloy DOHC cylinder head
- Forged crankshaft
- Strong connecting rods
- Aluminum pistons
- Piston oil squirters
- 16 valves
- Turbocharger
- Intercooler
The piston oil squirters are particularly important on the turbocharged engine because they help cool the pistons under high-load operation.

The Toyota 3S-GTE is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine with a cast-iron block, aluminum DOHC 16-valve cylinder head, electronic fuel injection, timing belt and intercooling. Toyota developed it as the turbocharged performance counterpart to the 3S-GE. Across its five generations, output increased from roughly 185 PS to around 260 PS, while the engine powered iconic models such as the Celica GT-Four, MR2 Turbo and Caldina GT-Four.
