This 1955 Chevrolet Cameo Pickup is a gorgeous example of the first year luxury Chevy truck with its iconic upscale look. Today it seems like every manufacturer has a luxury pickup truck option (e.g. Ford Raptor, Chevrolet’s High Country package, GMC’s Denali package, etc.), and driving down the road you see tons of them. But, it’s taken a long time for the idea for the luxury or sports pickup to catch on in the eyes of the public. Just think of the Ford Lightning or Lincoln Blackwood, or the GMC Syclone or Dodge’s Warlock or Lil’ Red Express, none of them survived for more than a few years. However, the first luxury, sports-oriented pickup truck was the Chevrolet Suburban Pickup, or as its become known the Chevrolet Cameo Pickup. See before the release of the Cameo, pickup trucks were thought of as utilitarian vehicles that were primarily used for work as opposed to every day transportation. But around the mid-50s, attitudes seemed to start shifting and buyers began to look for additional options and snazzier looking trucks that could serve both purposes. Perhaps the most iconic feature of the Cameo is the smooth sides of the bed that were crafted from fiberglass, which was a significant innovation in terms of both materials and design that diverged from the traditional stepside steel panels that dominated the market. The smooth side bed design also allowed for the bed itself to be wider which of course was lauded as well. Another innovation on the Cameo was the introduction of the panoramic “big back” glass window which further improved the visibility of the pickup and simultaneously added to the luxurious look of the truck. In their first year, 1955, all Cameos came in a single color scheme Bombay Ivory with Red accents and they all came with chromed bumpers, Bel Air-style wheelcovers, and chrome grilles. In total, 5,220 Cameo Pickup were produced in 1955 making up less than 2% of Chevrolet’s overall truck production. Powering this Cameo is a 235 Cubic Inch Inline 6 cylinder engine paired with a single barrel carburetor that was said to have pushed out 123 horsepower in its day. The 235 Inline 6 is backed by a 3 speed manual transmission that is shifted using a column mounted “3 on the tree” shifter. While most pickup trucks in the day were considered utilitarian and thus fairly spartan, this Cameo Pickup comes with several nice options. The chrome grille, front chrome bumper along with its chrome bumper guards are in wonderful shape, as are the rear chrome bumperettes. This Cameo pickup is also equipped with exterior sunvisor which adds to both the overall look and functionality of the truck. Dual chrome outside mirrors are always a welcome option on any vintage truck since they make squeezing in and out of tight spaces much easier. This Cameo Carrier rides on a set of wide whitewall bias-ply tires paired with full chrome wheelcovers, further adding to the classy look of the truck. The exterior on this classc Chevy pickup has been refinished in beautiful Bombay Ivory paint that is accented with Red painted trim. As for the pickup box, the fiberglass side panels, the wooden bed with chrome tie-down straps, and rear tailgate are all in fantastic condition, completing the exterior look of the truck. The interior on this Cameo Pickup Truck is gorgeous! The bench seat has been reupholstered in Ivory vinyl that is accented by Red patterned cloth inserts. The two-tone Red/Ivory painted dash, door panels, red carpet, and steering wheel all appear to be in their stock configuration. The dash is equipped with a 100 MPH speedometer, temperature gauge, amp gauge, oil pressure gauge, and fuel gauge, as well as an upgraded retro-style AM/FM/cassette entertainment system. Whether you’re adding to your existing Chevy truck collection or you’re purchasing your first classic pickup truck, this 1955 Chevrolet Cameo Pickup would make an excellent choice.
