Description
The Toyota 1.8L Valvematic engine is 2ZR-FAE, not 2ZR-FE. The 2ZR-FE is the conventional 1.8L engine with Dual VVT-i, while the 2ZR-FAE adds Toyota’s Valvematic variable valve-lift system. Toyota’s own specifications identify the 2ZR-FAE as a 1,798 cc DOHC 16-valve engine with Valvematic.
The 2ZR-FAE is a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol/gasoline engine belonging to Toyota’s ZR engine family.
Its main feature is Valvematic, which continuously controls intake-valve lift and timing. Instead of relying primarily on a conventional throttle plate to regulate engine airflow, Valvematic varies the opening of the intake valves according to engine demand. Toyota says this technology provides improved fuel economy and engine output compared with the conventional 2ZR-FE.
Valvematic is Toyota’s variable valve-lift technology.
It continuously adjusts the amount that the intake valves open, as well as coordinating intake-valve timing.
In simple terms:
Conventional engine:
Throttle plate → controls incoming air
Valvematic:
Intake-valve lift → directly controls the amount of air entering the engine
This can reduce pumping losses and improve efficiency.
Toyota describes Valvematic as a system providing a broader range of continuously variable intake-valve timing and lift according to engine requirements.

The Toyota 1.8L 2ZR-FAE Valvematic is a 1,798 cc naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine with DOHC, 16 valves, Dual VVT-i and Toyota’s Valvematic variable intake-valve-lift technology. Its 80.5 × 88.3 mm bore/stroke and 10.5:1 compression ratio make it a practical balance between performance, smoothness and fuel economy. A representative Toyota specification produces 147 hp at 6,400 rpm and 180 Nm at 4,000 rpm.
