TOYOTA COROLLA 1.6 20V 4A-GE

Description

The Toyota 4A-GE 20V is a high-performance 1.6-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota’s A-series. It is the final and most technologically advanced naturally aspirated development of the classic 4A-GE family.

Unlike the earlier 16-valve 4A-GE, the 20V version has five valves per cylinder—three intake and two exhaust—for a total of 20 valves. It also uses DOHC, electronic fuel injection, individual throttle bodies (ITBs), and Toyota’s VVT system

Toyota’s historical records identify the AE101 and AE111 Corolla Levin 4A-GE as 1,587 cc water-cooled inline-four DOHC engines; the AE101 version produced 160 PS at 7,400 rpm, while the later AE111 version produced 165 PS at 7,800 rpm.

The engine has four cylinders, with five valves per cylinder:

• 3 intake valves
• 2 exhaust valves

Therefore:

4 cylinders × 5 valves = 20 valves

The additional intake valve area allows the cylinder head to move a large amount of air, particularly at high engine speeds.

This is one of the main reasons the 4A-GE 20V is known for its high-RPM performance.

The Toyota Corolla 1.6L 4A-GE 20V is a 1,587 cc high-performance naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. Its defining features are the DOHC 20-valve cylinder head, three intake/two exhaust valves per cylinder, individual throttle bodies, VVT, electronic fuel injection and high-RPM design. The Silver Top produces about 160 PS, while the later Black Top produces about 165 PS at 7,800 rpm. Toyota’s own historical records confirm these outputs for the AE101 and AE111 Corolla Levin applications.
